Life of Kusum {PART-3}

                                              A BROKEN ANGEL

By Anusha Chauhan

(Part-1/3)

Kusum was so loved by her family, she was so sincere, so naive, even her parents had NEVER slapped or abused or harass her. She was the favourite of her grandfather amongst all of the siblings and cousins. He would only call her whenever he needs something. Kusum also did all the duties of her grandfather with full love and devotion.

After a few months, Deepak did it again. He abused Kusum again. Reason? The baby was being fussy and crying a lot. as they lived alone in the city, nobody was there to care for the child except for Kusum. So, she could not prepare dinner. He came home in the evening and got to know about it. He could have been supportive. He could have cooperated. But no. He was the MAN.

This time Kusum called her mother and told everything to her. Her mother questioned him. He shamefully said, "Kusum did not prepare food so he abused her. It is her duty after all to do all the chores. If she doesn't, this is what she gets." She was shocked. To date, he was an ideal son-in-law for Kusum's parents.

The next day, Kusum's mother called her and said, "Do not take it lightly. Next time if he dares to do such a thing, just call his parents and them. You should have told us earlier when he did so for the very first time. Nobody has a right to hurt you. We, your parents are not dead yet."

Now it was a routine and easier for him to find an excuse or two to abuse Kusum. So, next time he did so, Kusum called her father-in-law and told him everything. He scolded Deepak and told everything to Deepak's mother. And asked her to give some sense to Deepak.

Deepak's parents were nice people. They have loved and treated Kusum like their own daughter, maybe more than that. They were devastated. Kusum's mother-in-law was such an innocent lady, she called Kusum's mother and apologized for Deepak's actions.

Now that everybody in the family knew about it and scolded him, Deepak was not doing such deeds anymore. But the humiliation, comparison, gaslighting was still on. It was making Kusum quieter and weaker from inside. She was lost and depressed. She stopped talking and laughing. She just used to listen to all of the crap he said, quietly. Something BROKE inside her.

She did not know how to respond. She had not seen any of this at her home or family. So, she had no idea about her situation and how to handle it. What all she could do was crying holding her baby to the chest.

But she was relieved thinking that at least Deepak loved her, he doesn't go out seeking love or anything. He also used to apologize for his actions later on. She thought he is a good man, just a little aggressive. She loved him after all.

Then after a few years, Deepak got a job in another metro city. They shifted there. She thought a new place and a new job will do any good in her life. For a few months, it was good and everything was fine.

(To be continued...)
