A NEW BEGINNING
By Anusha Chauhan
(Part-1/2)
After the completion of Post Graduation, Kusum got engaged. She and her fiance, Deepak started chatting daily over the phone. They started to understand each other. Everything was like a dream to her.

She got married within a month. It was a happy ceremony. Everyone was happy except for a few relatives of the boy. Her new family was so loving, caring, and supportive of her. After a few months, she shifted to a metro city with her husband. She got a job as a lecturer in a school. And after a year or so, she got pregnant. Her happiness was over cloud nine.

When she started going to the hospital for regular checkups, her husband started getting irritated as he wanted her to go out alone to the doctor, just like few ladies do.
"Why don't you go and buy vegetables alone? Why don't you go and pay for the electricity bills? Why can't you be as smart as my friend's wife is? Why you are not as confident as my colleague? Why you don't have self-confidence? Why don't you stand up for yourself?"
He wanted her to do everything on her own, which wasn't possible for her as she was so shy, she was dependent on her family for everything and had low confidence. She just can't step out of the house ALONE.

He doesn't want to take her responsibilities or maybe even of the child. He was very rude. He started to compare Kusum with her younger sister who by that time also got married. He compared her with everyone he likes to. When she needed his care and love, he was giving her tears.
He could have encouraged her positively, he could have cooperated with her, but he just did not. Maybe he was not matured enough !!
Anyhow, days passed on. After a few months, she took maternity leaves from the school. And soon she was the mother of a beautiful baby boy. It was the best day as the baby shared his birthday with Kusum's father. The hospital bills were paid by Kusum's money.

Days started flying. Deepak asked her to leave the job and take care of the baby. Everyone also supported him saying there is no need for her to do the job and the baby needs her.

After a few months, when Deepak came home after office in the evening, Kusum said, "The baby has a fever and we need to rush to the doctor."
He just abused her and shouted, "Why you did not take the baby to the doctors? Why did not you took an auto and went alone? Why are you so dumb?"
Kusum was numb, devastated. She could not understand what just happened. She could not figure out what she should do now. She was just crying. She did not have the courage to tell anyone about it, not for many months or maybe the years. She was HELPLESS !!
